Personal Morality
Whether it is adultery or survival during war, the characters in this book struggle constantly with morality and defining themselves as good or right in spite of, or because of, personal choices and actions. Since there is no character that does not inflict some sort of pain, either emotional or physical, onto other human beings, there is a necessary dehumanization of the victim by the victimizer, and then a consistent and almost deafening internal conflict that accounts for a great deal of the written material within the book.
Dorrigo Evans says war has its âown logicâ (ch. 8, EPUB). That seems equally true of love and death and all the various relationships before, during, and after crisis. He also claims to despise virtue. Morality for Dorrigo, and for the other characters, is personal. The conflict to try to gain, maintain, or meld the reality into something good is completely internal, influenced only by the words and actions of others. No one in this book seeks out forgiveness or absolution from others, so their quest is even more sacred than that of those seeking to be seen as virtuous. Nakamura goes as far to suggest cannot know a manâs nature by his actions. With that assertion, he does what he has to do, just like all the characters in the book do.
As Dorrigo tries, and fails, to come to terms with his inability to come to the aid of Darky Gardiner, with the lack of feelings for his wife, and with his betrayal of his uncle while being lovers with Amy, the other characters also have similar struggles for different reasons. The amalgamation of these internal debates, justifications, challenges, and realizations culminate in a lengthy dialogue regarding personal choices and the way that life forces our hands, sometimes beyond what can be fathomed or tolerated.
